Pro’s Tip – Now that the golf season is upon us, the golf course is getting busier. It is a good idea to get in the habit of calling ahead to check on tee times as we will start seeing more play. I also want to remind everyone about how you can make a round of golf more enjoyable for you and everyone else.

  • Taking great care of the golf course. Filling divots with sand, fixing ball marks on the green, and keeping your golf cart in designated areas will help keep the golf course in better shape. If everyone takes care of the golf course, we will all have better, more enjoyable conditions in which to play.
  • Keeping up the pace of play. There is nothing more frustrating then playing behind really slow golfers. Make sure you play ready golf – be ready to hit when it is your turn. Keep your clubs between you and the next hole so you don’t have to back track when leaving for the next tee. Do your scorekeeping on the next tee so the players behind you can play to the green faster. Little time savers add up by the end of the round. You should also let faster golfers play through. If you do have beginning golfers or slow players, seek times when the course is not as busy. We are very fortunate that her at Meadowmeer we can enjoy a nice pace of play. As the golf course gets busier, we need to make sure to put even more emphasis on keeping up the pace of play. Singles and twosome should also realize that you can’t expect to play a speed round during busy times. Early mornings or late afternoons will allow you to play faster.

Meadowmeer Membership Drive – We currently have a spring membership drive for the month of April. Membership initiation fees are only $100 and new members get the month of April for free. If a current member sponsors a new member the will receive $50 in club credit! The initiation fee will increase to $250 starting May 1st – act now to save!

Come play the Meadow (aka Meadowmeer Golf & Country Club). Come play on any weekday in March and pay $20 for all the golf you can play. Golf carts are $10 per person. The course is in nice shape and you will have a great time! While you are here enjoy the Meadowmeer Grill. Chef Troy works up a couple of great lunch special each Thursday and Friday. Meadowmeer also has the best Hamburger on the Island – Hands down!

Pro’s Tips

Spring weather is on the way. Warm sunshine and blue skies are in our future. There is nothing finer that feeling that warm sunshine on your shoulders as you galivant down the fairway after a well struck tee shot. To ensure you are galivanting down the fairway and not in the rough or trees, I suggest a little spring training to get your golf game in shape. Become disciplined with your approach to the game and you will enjoy the results! It is simple as A, B, C!

  1. Have a weekly game where you have a standard golf group and game. Create an email list with ten of your favorite golfing buddies. Tell them you are going to play every Thursday morning rain or shine at 9:00. Buy some rain gear so if the weather is poor you can still stay comfortable and have fun. Have a standard golf game to create some competition and friendly rivalry.

  1. Practice at least once a week. Have a practice day where you not only hit golf balls but also work on your short game. In the time it takes to play nine holes, you can get a lot of quality practice time in. Make your practice fun. Create a game where you keep score. Take an easy chip shot and tell yourself that you are not leaving until you hole out a shot. Count how many times you must hit a chip until you hole it. This will help you create a positive mind set. Instead of trying to get a chip close to the hole, you will be trying to make it. Once you start aiming small you will start missing small.

  1. Have fun! Laugh at your bad shots and cheer for your good ones! Play the game with a great attitude. We are all extremely lucky to have the opportunity to chase a ball around a beautiful golf course – cheers!

March 6th – Ladies Group Kickoff Meeting. The Ladies Club plays golf every Tuesday morning though the golf season. We have a different competition each week and the Ladies have a wide range of abilities. It doesn’t matter if you are a very experienced golfer or just beginning, this group is welcoming and fun to play with. Just call the golf shop for more information. League play begins on the first Tuesday in April.

March 15th – Thursday Night Men’s League Captain Meeting. 6:32 PM at the Club House. The Thursday Night Men’s League is a bunch of fun. We average around 100 golfers each Thursday from April Through September. We always have teams that are looking for more teammates. The field plays nine holes and tees off between 2:00 and 5:30 PM. Come join the fun!

In addition to new flags for the flagsticks, we have installed reflectors on top of each flagstick. This will allow golfers to more easily shoot the flagstick with a rangefinder. Please be careful setting the flagstick down as to protect the reflectors. We also have a shorter flagstick on hole number three. Because it is a blind approach shot, make sure the green is clear and the golfers are out of range before you hit your approach shot.

Pro’s Tips

The calendar has flipped to February. I always feel like when we get to February, we have turned the corner. November, December, and January (the three toughest months for golfers around here) are in the rear view mirror. The anticipation of spring will increase the urge for every golfer to pick up their golf clubs and head to the golf course. This year I hope we have what I like to call the “fake spring”. The fake spring is two weeks in February where the sun shines and everyone feels like spring has arrived. The birds start chipping and the golfers really start getting really itchy to tee it up.

While a small minority of diehard golfers have been playing all winter, the average golfer is a little more of the fair weather sort. They need warmer weather to get them to the first tee. These folks have not touched a golf club for months. Excited to just be out playing, their first round of golf is often a good one. They have low expectations and just are happy to be out playing the game. This feeling changes quickly. After a good or even average round, they expect to play better. They try harder, grip the club tighter, and alas, play poorly. Why is it when we don’t care, the game is easier? Golf is a very mental game. Just like swing habits, mental habits get formed over time. Some good and some bad.

Pat Perez is a PGA golf professional. Playing golf on the PGA tour for almost twenty years, Pat had a typical year in 2016. He finished the year ranked 118th in the world. In 2017 at age 41 he had his best year ever and finished the year ranked 19th in the world. When interviewed at a recent tournament, the announcer asked him the obvious, what changed? Why did you have such a great year? Pat said “I quit caring”. He then followed up with “I quit caring about the bad shots I hit”. He started playing in the present and quit worrying about his score. This type of mental approach sounds easy but it is very difficult.

Every golfer worries about their score and the results of every shot they are about to attempt. We all know the score matters. The key to a better mental approach is focusing more on the process and less on the results. Focus on making a great swing rather than worrying about any negative results. We all have heard someone say “I hate this hole, I always find the water”.  What they should be saying is, “I am going to make a great swing and I am going to visualize hitting a great shot that finishes close to the pin”. However, just like improving your putting stroke, improving your mental game takes practice. With a better mental approach I know you will enjoy your golf more.
